How long should you vibrate concrete with an internal vibrator?

When pouring concrete, proper vibration is essential to ensure that the concrete fills the formwork correctly and achieves the required strength. Internal vibrators help remove trapped air from fresh concrete while distributing the material more evenly around reinforcement and into corners of the formwork.

A common question when pouring concrete is how long it should actually be vibrated. If the vibration time is too short, air may remain trapped within the concrete. If the concrete is vibrated for too long, the material may begin to segregate, affecting both strength and surface finish.

How to use an internal vibrator when pouring concrete

When an internal vibrator is inserted into fresh concrete, the material begins to move and consolidate. To achieve even compaction, the vibrator should be inserted at several points throughout the pour, with some overlap between each vibration zone.

The required vibration time varies depending on the consistency of the concrete, the size of the structure and the amount of reinforcement. When pouring slabs or smaller foundations, for example, shorter vibration periods are often sufficient because the concrete can flow more easily throughout the formwork. Walls, columns and structures with dense reinforcement may require more insertion points to ensure that the vibration reaches all areas of the concrete.

Signs that the concrete has been sufficiently vibrated

In many cases, only a few seconds at each insertion point are needed before moving the internal vibrator to the next position. The important thing is to allow the concrete to consolidate without vibrating it more than necessary.
A clear indication that sufficient vibration has been achieved is when air bubbles stop rising to the surface. The concrete will also develop a more uniform appearance and flow more effectively around reinforcement and into corners and edges.
It is also important not to drag the internal vibrator sideways through the concrete. Doing so may move the material unevenly through the formwork rather than consolidating it where it is. For best results, the vibrator should instead be withdrawn vertically and moved systematically to the next insertion point.

What happens if concrete is vibrated for too long?

Excessive vibration can cause the concrete to segregate. Coarser aggregate may sink towards the bottom of the structure while water and finer materials accumulate closer to the surface. This can affect both the strength and surface finish of the finished concrete.
Over-vibration is more likely with concrete of a more fluid consistency or when the internal vibrator is held in the same position for too long. The vibration time should therefore be adapted to the concrete mix and the type of structure rather than using exactly the same approach throughout the entire pour.

Internal vibrators for different types of concrete pours

Different types of concrete pours require different vibration solutions. For smaller projects, compact and easy-to-handle internal vibrators may be more practical, while larger pours often require equipment designed for longer operating periods and larger volumes of concrete.
In some projects, external vibrators are also used as a complement, particularly for precast concrete elements or formwork where vibration applied from the outside can provide better results.
